Bedford is a pleasant market town, 80 km north of London, between Cambridge and Oxford. Heathrow airport is one hour away.
The Study Centre is a special unit of Bedford School with its own building in one corner of the beautiful school estate. Boys and girls aged 11 to 17 come to us to improve their English and to have the experience of boarding school life.
A maximum of 30 students live here, in double or single study-bedrooms. There is close supervision and pastoral care, seven days a week. The houseparents and house tutor live in the Study Centre, and a teacher is here every weekday evening until bedtime. There are strict rules about going out, and strongly-enforced bedtimes.
English makes up at least half of the timetable. We give our students an unparalleled opportunity to lay strong linguistic foundations for their future study. In a teaching group of six, everyone has a chance to be heard. We also teach science, maths, ICT and sport. All the teachers of these subjects are specialists in their areas, with school experience, additionally trained in teaching English. Students have access to our computers in homework time, and in their free time, with unlimited but closely monitored Internet access.
We arrange three trips every term, one to London and the theatre, the others to a variety of cultural, historical and educational places. We enrich our curriculum with Saturday morning activities which include music, art and drama. The summer course students always visit London, a theme park and places of historical or scientific interest.
We do not lose contact with our students after they move on, but encourage them to stay in touch. We know they look back on their time here with affection. We welcome callers and visitors at any time.
